Shostakovich with feeling

Saturday's concert with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra featured contrasting elements, with Norwegian late romantic lyricism interwoven with its dramatic Russian counterpart in a delightful mix.

Dimitri Shostakovich's violin concerto in a-moll opened with the 19 year old soloist Eldbjørg Hemsing on violin.

The piece was very well delivered where the real highlights are found in the first act, Nocturne, with brilliant play interwoven with sweeping violin melodies, and in the third act, Passacaglia, where a dolorous violin sours above the otherwise quiescent orchestral sound and the low brass pours out massive layers of golden sound like so much honey.

Delicious!

The violin cadence between the third and fourth act was also worth extra mention. It was well played and well interpreted and made a fine bridge into the finishing act, Burlesque, which rounded off the piece in a rhythmic and playful manner.
