We listened to the orchestra with pleasure, though what we were really waiting for was the Concert. Eldbjørg Hemsing and her accompanying Oslo Camerata offered a very expressive version, with a most vibrant soloist part and an intensely romantic central movement.

The Concert for violin in E major (BWV 1042) by Johann Sebastian Bach, one of his two concerts for solo violin, performed by the Norwegian instrumentalist Eldbjørg Hemsing, brought the first half to a close. Though gifted with a refined technique, perhaps something was missing in his expressivity of the score, which however was much more powerful in the encore – the Saraband – also by the same composer.
